Stars Support 'Fearless' Melissa McCarthy at LA's “Tammy” Premiere

Warner Bros.(LOS ANGELES) — Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon and McCarthy’s husband and Tammy co-star, co-writer, and director Ben Falcone gathered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles Monday night for the premiere of their new comedy.

Also on hand to wish them well on the red carpet were producer Will Ferrell, McCarthy’s Mike and Molly co-stars Billy Gardell and Swoosie Kurtz, Sarandon’s very pregnant daughter Eva Amurri, and other famous friends and family.

The road movie has McCarthy playing Tammy Banks, a woman on the edge, thanks to the fact that she loses her job and her car — and her husband to another woman — all on the same day. She hits the road with her hard-partying mom, played by Sarandon in Falcone’s directorial debut.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! before the premiere, McCarthy joked it was a challenge to make the normally glamorous Sarandon to look as disheveled as her character appears onscreen. Describing a delay with shooting, McCarthy recalled, “They’re like…’Susan looks too good.’ And then I say, ‘Is it looking like pretty lighting? Are we looking too good?’ ‘No, just Susan.’ I was like, ‘So I look dumpy? It’s good?’ They’re like, ‘Yeah, you’re fine. Susan seems to be glowing from within.’”

On the red carpet, Gardell, who plays McCarthy’s onscreen hubby in Mike and Molly told ABC News Radio that it’s no surprise to him his co-star is one of the most bankable female stars in Hollywood. “She’s fearless,” he says. “She’s not afraid to be awkward and make it really funny, which makes people identify with you.”

Mike and Molly co-star Cleo King also showed up to support McCarthy and Falcone, who have worked together previously in hits like Bridesmaids and The Heat. King, who had a small part in current box office champ Transformers: Age of Extinction, told ABC News Radio there’s no competition on the set of their sitcom regarding their respective movies’ ticket sales. “Who cares, who cares?!” King laughed. “I love Melissa McCarthy, I love Ben, we saw a trailer for this thing maybe six months ago, I’m so excited to support her tonight, I really am!”

Tammy, which also stars Grey’s Anatomy alumna Sandra Oh, Oscar winner Kathy Bates and Dan Aykroyd, opens July 2.
