Jan Kruger/Getty Images (LONDON) — A former champion and first-time finalist will meet in the Wimbledon Final as Petra Kvitova and Eugenie Bouchard each won their semifinal matchups on Thursday. Kvitova was the 2011 champion while Bouchard has reached the semi-finals in each of the previous two majors this year.
“I’ve put in a lot of hard work and it’s been kind of years in the making to me,” Bouchard said. “So I believe in myself and I expect good results. I’ve had a good start to the season, but I expect myself to do even better than that.”
Bouchard is projected to rise to No. 7 in the world, the highest ever for a Canadian woman, and reach No. 6 by claiming the championship. The 20-year-old has not dropped a set in six matches during the tournament and is on the verge of becoming the youngest Wimbledon champion since Maria Sharapova won it at 19 in 2006.
For Kvitova, she has reached at least the quarterfinals in each of the last five years. The 24-year-old is 35-5 all-time at Wimbledon and looking for her second title. Kvitova beat Bouchard in their only meetings on hard courts.
