NASCAR Postponed at Daytona

Chris Graythen/Getty Images(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.) — Heavy rains and treacherous conditions forced NASCAR to postpone it’s Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday. The Coke Zero 400 will commence on Sunday morning with the green flag set to drop at 11 a.m.

The weather began in midafternoon but a larger cell came over the track just before 8 p.m. on Saturday night. Track officials continued to hold out hope, drying the track as the rain continued to fall, before ultimately announcing the postponement at 9 p.m.

Joie Chitwood, track president at Daytona, said the decision was made because it would have taken at least 1 hour and 45 minutes to get the track ready for racing and an 11 p.m. start would create a 2 a.m. finish that was not conducive for safety.

David Gilliland is on the pole for the race but there is still more rain in the forecast for Sunday.
