Netherlands Knock Out Costa Rica in Penalties to Advance

Robert Cianflone/Getty Images(SALVADOR, Brazil) — With less than a minute left in extra time, Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal substituted out goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen for Tim Krul. It turned out to be a good move.

Krul stopped two penalty shots including the match winner to send the Netherlands to a 4-3 win in penalties over Costa Rica in the quarterfinal of the World Cup.

The Dutch outshot the Costa Ricans 20-6 but after 90 minutes the game was still scoreless.

In the penalty kicks, Robin Van Persie, Arjen Robben, Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt all scored to send the Netherlands to their second-straight semifinals.

The Dutch will take on Argentina Wednesday. The match scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m Eastern. You can watch that on ESPN.
