Curry County Sheriff Stepping Down Due To Budget Stress

GOLD BEACH, OR — Curry County Sheriff John Bishop said Monday he’s leaving his job, citing the physical stress of budget cuts and dwindling department resources.  Bishop told local reporters the stress is taking too great a toll on his health, and he doesn’t see the situation improving.  Last fall, county voters rejected a $3.2 million public safety tax increase that would have tripled local property taxes to maintain law enforcement services.

Bishop plans to retire in September to become executive director of the Oregon State Sheriffs Association.  Curry County commissioners will appoint a new sheriff.
