Mom Who Left Baby on Subway Platform in Custody: Police

NYPD(NEW YORK) — The woman who pushed her baby onto a New York City subway platform before hopping back on the train is in police custody, but they have not yet charged her with a crime.

Police arrested the woman, 20, early Tuesday morning on Manhattan’s Upper West Side after releasing a photo of the infant who was dumped at the 59th Street Columbus Circle subway station on Monday. She was taken into custody about 12:30 a.m. not far from where she is accused of leaving the infant.

“I’m just glad they found the mom and the baby’s fine,” said Catherine Boursier, the woman who found the stranded child on the subway platform, shown sucking on a bottle in the police photo, alone in a red-and-white polka-dot stroller.

Boursier stayed with the child until police arrived around noon.

The suspect was riding a northbound No. 1 train when she pushed the baby off the train and onto the platform before jumping back on the train and leaving the infant alone, police said.

The 10-month-old baby was taken to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center for a check-up and is in stable condition. The baby is now in custody of the city’s Administration for Children’s Services.

Her mother has not been charged yet but the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Police also released a video showing the woman, whose name has not been released, wearing sunglasses and a white tank top while pushing the infant through the emergency exit to enter the subway station. She later leaves the way without the baby.
