(LONDON) — It’s already in place for U.S.-bound flights. But now, enhanced security measures are being expanded to all flights heading in or out of the U.K.
Passengers are being asked to ensure that their cellphones, tablets and other electronic devices are sufficiently charged in case they are asked to turn them on. This is in an effort to guard against hidden explosives.
“We have issued advice to the airline industry which will require the passenger, if asked to do so, to show that any electronic device that they are carrying with them can actually be operated, and this will be done on various routes,” said Britain’s transport secretary, Patrick McLoughlin.
Heathrow Airport has updated its website’s home page to reflect the added measures:
“If you are flying, please make sure any electronic devices are charged before you travel. If your device does not switch on, you may not be allowed to bring it on to the aircraft.”
The check will be done randomly, so not all passengers will actually have to press their ‘on’ buttons.
