BOARDMAN, OR — Eastern Oregon tribes are objecting to a proposed Columbia River coal export terminal. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation is one of several groups opposing the project, arguing the proposed dock in Boardman would interfere with their fishing rights. Advocates however, say the terminal would bring needed jobs, especially after an area coal plant shuts down in 2020. And part of the Ambre Energy’s proposal includes up to $800,000 per year for local tribes.
The Australia-based company can’t begin construction without a key permit from the Department of State Lands, and it’s up against an August 18th deadline for that permit approval. Ambre Energy hopes to eventually ship 8.8 million tons of coal per year down the Columbia River and overseas to Asia.
