Salem Man Arrested After Impersonating Deputy During Test Drive

SALEM, OR — A Salem man has been charged with criminal impersonation after pretending to be a sheriff’s deputy while test driving an SUV, Saturday.

Shouting from an open window of a Chevrolet Tahoe at a motorcyclist, Anthony McGuire, age 39, ordered the man to pull over.  When the motorcyclist complied, it became apparent that McGuire was not in fact a law enforcement official, as he presented no badge or identification.  Two employees of Good Fellows Auto Sales, where along for the ride, after they became suspicious of the man’s visits to the car lot during the previous two days.

McGuire, who has a record of auto theft, also told the employees he was a sheriff’s deputy and requested to test drive the same black SUV each day.  The employees and the motorcyclist notified the Marion County Sheriff’s Office after the faux – traffic stop.  McGuire confessed to the impersonation and was taken to the county jail and charged with a misdemeanor.  A court date has not yet been set.
