Typhoon Neoguri Pounds Okinawa

JIJI PRESS/AFP/Getty Images(OKINAWA, Japan) — Typhoon Neoguri pounded Japan’s Okinawa island chain Wednesday, injuring dozens, and is now headed for Japan’s main island of Kyushu.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the powerful typhoon has lost some of its intensity, but remains strong and is expected to bring heavy rains and violent winds to Kyushu on Thursday.

While the typhoon has now left Okinawa, the agency said remnants were delivering torrential downpours to the region.

The Okinawa Times reported 32 injuries related to Neoguri, and said the typhoon had toppled trees and overturned vehicles across the prefecture.

Evacuation orders for nearly 600,000 people in the island chain are now being lifted.

Neoguri means raccoon in Korean.
