Kerry “condemned the rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel and stressed Israel’s right to defend itself,” according to a readout from a senior State Department official. After Israel sent ground troops into Gaza on Sunday to destroy Hamas missiles, Kerry expressed concern about escalating tension.

He also described his engagement with leaders in the region, trying to restore calm and prevent civilian deaths. Once again, the secretary of state also noted the United States’ willingness to facilitate an end to hostilities.
