Can Wheeler Run For Re-Election?

SALEM, OR — State Treasurer Ted Wheeler has two more years left in his term, and he has yet to announce if he’ll run for re-election.  But, that’s not stopping some from debating whether he’s even eligible for another term

Oregon’s constitution allows a Treasurer to serve only two four-year terms within a 12-year period.  But Ted Wheeler will have served six years when his current term expires at the end of 2016.  He was appointed Treasurer in March 2010 after Ben Westlund died in office, he was then re-elected in 2012.  The Secretary of State’s office is looking into whether those first two years count toward the term limit, and has asked for an opinion on this unique situation from Oregon’s Attorney General.

Wheeler is reported to be considering a run for Governor in 2018, and has not said if he plans to run again for State Treasurer.
