State Fire Marshal Promoting Safety While Cooking Outdoors

Bbq Safety StockBEND, OR — The state Fire Marshal’s office is reminding Central Oregonians to make safety a priority when barbecuing, grilling or smoking outdoors this time of year.  OFM spokesman Rich Hoover told KBNW News despite being common place, grills can be dangerous if not used properly.  He said it’s important that they are used outdoors, away from enclosed spaces.

Hoover added it’s important you maintain positive control over the grill and the surrounding area.

“Something could easily catch fire and if you’re not careful enough, and you have your grill under the eve of a house or a low hanging branch, the fire can easily transfer to those items.  So, we recommend you stay away from those types of  flammable situations, keep it off of a deck and always watch while you’re using it.”

Hoover said it’s also important to keep a three-foot safety zone around your grill.  And always keep an eye on children and pets playing at any kind of cookout.

Here are addition grilling safety tips from the state Fire Marshal’s Office:

  • Keep the grill, smoker, or turkey fryer away from siding, deck railings, and out from under eaves or overhanging branches according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Grills, smokers, and turkey fryers should never be used on a porch or balcony; including any porch or balcony on an upper level of a building.
  • Periodically remove grease or fat buildup from catch trays to prevent it from being ignited by a hot grill.
  • Never leave the grill, smoker, or turkey fryer unattended.
  • For propane grills, make sure to check the propane cylinder hose for leaks. A light soap and water solution applied to the hose will reveal escaping propane quickly by releasing bubbles.
  • Only use proper starter fluid for charcoal grills. Store the charcoal starter fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • Never add charcoal starter fluid to coals or kindling that has already been ignited.
