Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon condemned gubernatorial candidate Dennis Richardson and reaffirmed their support of Governor John Kitzhaber’s re-election efforts.
The PPA had recently uncovered a 1990 op-ed letter written by Richardson. “A woman relinquishes her unfettered right to control her own body when her actions cause the conception of a baby,” Richardson wrote.
“We find Dennis Richardson’s comments outrageous and out of touch with Oregon values,” says Executive Director of the PPA Laura Terrill Patten. She says that while the letter is an early example of Richardson’s beliefs, it’s not an isolated incident.
“Women in Oregon don’t relinquish their rights when Dennis Richardson says so,” Patten says.
The PPA says they hadn’t yet planned to announce an endorsement, but that discovery of the 1990 letter prompted them re-endorse Kitzhaber earlier than anticipated.
