County Offers Free “College” Program

Deschutes County LogoDeschutes County is offering a free education series to interested county residents as a means to connect with county employees and officials, and to learn the inner workings of the County.

“What’s really interesting is a lot of people don’t understand ‘What does a city do? What does a county do?’ They may not understand that; there’s a lot of people who don’t,” says Deschutes County Communications Director Anna Johnson.

“So we thought, let’s let taxpayers know what we’re doing with their money because we’re very transparent and we want them to know.”

Johnson says the program will include several field trips to County departments as well as some classroom time.

“We have a lot of interactive tours: They will see Knott landfill, the County Jail, the Election and Clerk’s Office- on Election night, and we go out to the Fair and Expo Center for a whole night, so it’s really great. They get to see a whole tour of that incredible facility- it’s the best in the state.”

Deschutes County College will be held for 11 consecutive weeks on Tuesday evenings from September 2 through November 4.

Applicants from Sisters, Redmond, and La Pine are especially encouraged to apply.

There is limited meeting space, and not all applicants will be accepted into this year’s class.

Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on July 31.

Receive an application by contacting the Deschutes County Administration offices at (541) 330-4640, by sending email to annaj@deschutes.org
