BEND, OR — Before you plan your next hike, bike ride or kayak trip in Central Oregon, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is asking you to prepare accordingly. Lt. Scott Shelton told KBNW News it’s estimated that between 1.2 million and 1.5 million people visit the Deschutes National Forest each year to recreate. And with the rapid changes in weather, especially during the summer months, he’s says it’s important you plan for almost anything.
Lt. Shelton said at a minimum, you should carry what’s known as the ten essentials, which includes sun protection, a map and compass, extra food, extra water, first aid-supplies and more. He added if you need Search and Rescue resources, you can help crews by telling a friend or family member where you plan to be, when you plan to start, and what time you hope to return.
“What a great starting point for us to have, it makes your trip safer and more enjoyable and it really, really, in the long-run, could make the difference in someone’s life.”
Lt. Shelton said in the event your get lost or injured on a weekend hike or ride, it’s best to call for help sooner rather than later. He said often they are able to help before crews are dispatched.
