iStock/Thinkstock(KABUL, Afghanistan) — The audit of votes cast in Afghanistan’s disputed presidential runoff election is not going well.
Following accusations of fraud, candidates Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani agreed to the audit as brokered by Secretary of State John Kerry.
This came as preliminary results showed Ghani, Afghanistan’s former finance minister, had defeated his rival.
However, little progress has been made since then while Abdullah has pulled his support of the vote check, which involves eight million ballots.
Both Afghans and the U.S. are anxious to get the matter resolved so a new president can step in to replace Hamid Karzai, who was forbidden to run again due to term limits.
The new leader, whether it’s Ghani or Abdullah, is expected to sign a post-war pact with the U.S. that would leave a residual force of American troops in the country after the end of 2014.
