iStock/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — Add Egypt to the list of the countries that has a beef with the U.S.
Cairo is angry about remarks made by State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, who was asked last week why the Obama administration hasn’t withheld military assistance to Israel in its battle with Hamas as it did when the Egyptian military went after supporters of former Islamic President Mohamed Morsi last year.
Harf explained the difference was Israel is fighting a terrorist group while “In Egypt, you had a government cracking down on its own people.”
Foreign Ministry spokesman Badr Abdel-Ati called Harf’s statement “ignorant” and “lacking,” and Egypt has delivered an official note of protest to the State Department.
Relations between Washington and Cairo have been strained for the past year although the U.S. has supported Egypt’s efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
