San Antonio Spurs Hire First Full-Time Female Assistant Coach in NBA History

Brian Ach/WireImage(SAN ANTONIO) — The San Antonio Spurs made history on Tuesday, hiring WNBA player Becky Hammon as an assistant coach, the first woman to hold that title full-time in the history of the NBA.

Hammon, 37, announced on July 23 that she would finish out the WNBA season with the San Antonio Stars, her 16th in the league, before retiring. Hammon, a six-time WNBA All-Star, will then join the coaching staff of the reigning NBA champions.

According to the San Antonio Spurs website, Hammon worked with the Spurs during this past season. Head coach Gregg Popovich praised Hammon’s addition, saying that he is “confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

Hammon ranks among the WNBA’s all-time leaders in points scored (5,809), assists (1,687) and games played (445).
