Watch For Heat Illness When Working Outdoors

Construction.STOCK.1.000BEND, OR — With hot, and even muggy conditions gripping Central Oregon this month, the state Department of Consumer and Business Services is encouraging employers and workers to take precaution when outdoors.  Labor-intensive activities, such as construction, landscaping and agricultural work, can expose workers to dangerous heat.  Spokeswoman Melanie Mesaros told KBNW News it’s important the employees and managers remember water, rest and shade during the heat of the day.

“And something else to remember to to put off the heaviest, labor intensive work for the coolest part of the day or put it off for another day if you have to wait for the heat to subside.”

Mesaros said it’s also important to wear light, loose-fitting, breathable clothes.  And make sure you drink a lot of water, and take it easy on caffeine and alcohol.

Here are some additional tips from the DCBS:

  • Use the buddy system (work in pairs) to monitor the heat.
  • Drink plenty of cool water (one small cup every 15 to 20 minutes).
  • Avoid eating large meals before working in hot environments.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages (these make the body lose water and increase the risk of heat illnesses)
