Man Killed In Crash Near Dufur

081414.fatal.hwy197_wardrd.1DUFUR, OR — One man was killed in a two-vehicle crash near Dufur Thursday morning.  Oregon State Police troopers said a pickup truck tried to make a left hand turn on to Highway 197, and collided with a northbound sports utility vehicle.  The passenger in the SUV, Henry Jacob Girtz, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver was flown to a Portland area hospital with serious injuries.  A 17-year-old girl in the SUV was taken to the hospital in The Dalles with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck, Peter D. Kelley, 73, The Dalles, was not hurt and is cooperating with investigators.  Highway 197 was blocked for several hours Thursday as crews responded.
