BEND, OR — If you’ve done any house-hunting lately, you know Bend is struggling through a rental shortage. The City’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee has an idea that supporters say could bring some relief.
A new proposal under consideration by the committee could waive some of the red tape surrounding construction of accessory dwellings – otherwise known as mother-in-law apartments. It would allow such building on all lots within the city of Bend, and would increase the size allowed to accommodate 2-bedroom apartments.
Officials with the Central Oregon Builders Association predict the streamlined process would quickly boost the area’s rental supply. Some homeowners, however, have expressed concern that such buildings would change the feel of neighborhoods.
The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee could present the idea to the city council as soon as late September.
