PRINEVILLE, OR — The Crook County Sheriff’s Office ranks grew by one last week. He’s 15 months old, likes to chew pine cones, and goes by the name of Jett.
Deputy Mitch Madden says that he became interested in partnering with a K-9 officer after seeing firsthand what the work was like.
“Training with other canine handlers in Central Oregon, ever since I helped them I’ve always wanted to have my own dog working patrol.”
Deputy Madden says that Jett is remarkably playful and is always after his toys, which makes the searching vehicles that much easier for both officers.
“He associates the odor of drugs that he’s trained on with his toys so when he comes across the drug odor he knows that his toy is going to be coming out somewhere.”
In addition to patrols with his partner, Jett has many future appearances scheduled in local schools and within the community.
The drug-detection dog was acquired by the Sheriff’s Office after a year-long fundraising campaign raised over $22,000.
Several local businesses also stepped forward to donate toward the cause.
Donations toward Jett’s food and care are being accepted at the Crook County Sheriff’s Office via their website and in person.
