UN Secretary-General Urges Afghanistan Presidential Candidates to Agree on Unity Government

Ban noted the commitments both Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani agreed to in July. At that point, the two candidates agreed to accept the results of a nationwide audit of the presidential run-off election. The audit was supervised by international officials.

The main audit was completed last week and the results are expected to declare Ghani the victor. Ban called the election “a pivotal moment for Afghanistan,” and said that “genuine partnership will be required in tackling Afghanistan’s many challenges.”
