Eight people are reported dead in the shooting. Gilchrist County Sheriff Robert Schultz said at a Thursday night press conference that the suspect is believed to have killed his daughter and his six grandchildren in his home before calling 911, and then committing suicide. He also noted that law enforcement had previously been called to the home.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is the lead agency investigating the shooting, according to spokeswoman Samantha Andrews.

Bell has a population of about 350 people and is located some 30 miles west of Gainesville.
