White House to Host Dinner for Indian Prime Minister with No Food

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a packed schedule during his visit to the U.S. next week, including a host of meetings, a luncheon with Vice President Joe Biden and a dinner with President Obama.

But there’s one thing Modi won’t be doing during his two-day trip to Washington: eating.

The prime minister will be on a strict religious fast, presenting the White House with the challenge of hosting a dinner with no food.

“This is something that we have taken on and, as with all visitors to the White House, we accommodate the interests and needs of any leader who visits the White House and is participating in White House meetings,” a senior administration official told reporters.

Visits by foreign leaders are carefully crafted and meticulously thought out. The White House insists Modi’s visit will be no different.

“Both we and the Indians have agreed that this should not be a distraction or change any of the things that we want to take on during this visit,” according to another senior administration official. “It’s simply a practice by the Prime Minister that we will work to accommodate, but all the events will go forward and we look forward to conducting a full range of business.”
