The United States government has released six Guantanamo Bay detainees, sending them to Uruguay for resettlement.

In a statement, the Pentagon identified the men as 4 Syrians, a Tunisian, and a Palestinian.

The men had been detained for 12 years as suspected militants with ties to al Qaeda but were never charged.

Their release brings the total number of prisoners in Guantanamo down to 136– the lowest number since it opened in January 2002.
