The RCMP said in a release that Ashton Larmond, 24, was arrested in Ottawa on Friday.

The charges he faces include facilitating a terrorist activity and taking part in the activity of a terrorist group.

His brother, Carlos Larmond, 24, was also arrested on Friday at the Montreal Pierre-Elliott Trudeau International Airport as he was intending to travel overseas for terrorist purposes, according to officials.

He is charged with participation in the activity of a terrorist group in trying to leave Canada to take part in terrorist activity abroad.

“Today’s arrests speak to our ability to tackle a threat that is multifaceted and constantly evolving,” said Assistant Commissioner James Malizia, Officer in charge of the RCMP’s Federal Policing Operations in a statement on Friday.  “Through collaborative efforts with our partners, we were able to prevent these individuals from leaving Canada to engage in terrorist activity overseas.”

The arrests on Friday come as the country remains on heightened alert, following two separate attacks on Canadian soldiers in October.
