Raids Conducted in Numerous European Countries

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — A number of European nations carried out terror-related raids in the last week, in the wake of recent terror attacks in Paris and the fatal terror raid in Belgium.

Thirteen arrests were made in Belgium on Friday on suspicion of planning terrorist acts. Five of the 13 were charged with participation to terrorist activities, and three of those five are currently in prison, while the other two are on conditional release.

The German raids saw five arrested on suspicion of recruiting and providing support to jihadist groups, three of whom were released. No links were found between those individuals and the Paris attacks. Berlin police also carried out searches at 13 locations linked to the arrests of the two men.

Greek police arrested four on Saturday on request from Belgium due to suspicion they might be linked to the Verviers terror cell on which a raid was conducted last week, resulting in the deaths of two suspects. Two of the four have since been released, with one set to be extradited to Belgium.

One person detained earlier this month in Bulgaria will be extradited to France after being linked to one of the Kouachi brothers involved in the Charlie Hebdo attack.

Also, on Tuesday, five Russian men were arrested by French police in the two of Beziers for possession of “very dangerous explosives.” The director of regional police in Montpellier Gilles Soulie said that there were no indications that there were plans for a terrorist attack and that they were not being investigated for terrorism-related activities.
