We’ve been notified by several members of the community that a “Captain from the Bend Police Department” is calling people from a spoofed number and demanding payment for unpaid court fines or informing them they have a warrant for their arrest. The caller ID displays a number associated with our office. The suspect male caller is described as having a Southern accent.
“Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity.” (More info: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id)
No governmental agency will call you and demand payment for fines over the phone. They also will never ask for payment via gift cards, iTunes cards, Green Dot cards, etc.
Law enforcement reminds you to never give out you personal information or financial details to companies you do not initiate contact with.
If you receive one of these calls, please file a report online: https://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx/
