15-Year-Old American Upsets 12-Seed Cibulkova

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Fifteen-year-old American CiCi Bellis defeated 12th seeded Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the first-round of the US Open Tuesday.

Bellis becomes the youngest player to win a match at the US Open since 1996 when Anna Kournikova won at the age of 15.

“I went into the match thinking it was going to be such a great experience, but I never thought I would come out on top,” Bellis said.

Since Bellis is still an amateur, she can’t collect on what will at least be $60,420 in prize money for winning the match.

Bellis will take on Kazakh Zarina Diyas in the second round.
