Kerry Says Operation to Destroy ISIS 'Can Take a Long Time'

ABC News(JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia) — Secretary of State John Kerry sat down for a one-on-one with ABC News’ Alex Marquardt in Saudi Arabia Thursday as he works with allies in the fight against extremist militants.

During the interview, Kerry declined to call the offensive against ISIS a war.

“We’re engaged in a counter-terrorism operation of a significant order and counter-terrorism operations can take a long time. They go on. I think war is the wrong reference term with respect to that,” he said.

He also warned that the fight against ISIS may have to be finished by the next administration.

“The end game looks like an ISIS that can no longer threaten the United States of America, no longer threatens the region, no longer threatens Iraq itself and has the ability to mount attacks against the United States, against others,” Kerry said.
