Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles Has High Ankle Sprain

Garrett W. Ellwood/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles endured a high ankle sprain in the team’s loss to the Denver Broncos Sunday, according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Charles injured the ankle in the first quarter after only two carries.

High ankle sprains quite often can keep a player off the field for multiple weeks, but the Chiefs haven’t announced any timetable on Charles’ return.

“It doesn’t look to be a real severe one, but it does have the components of a high ankle sprain,” Reid said. “What does that mean? We’ll see what happens.”

If Charles is out for any length of time, it would be tough on the Chiefs.

The 27-year-old accounted for 1,980 all-purpose yards and 19 touchdowns last season.

After Charles left the game Sunday, Knile Davis took over in the backfield. The second-year running back carried the call 22 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns.
