Friday Declared POW-MIA Recognition Day

US FlagSALEM, OR — This week, Governor John Kitzhaber is recognizing the sacrifice of those who have been held as prisoners of war or who remain missing in action.  Governor Kitzhaber proclaimed this Friday to be POW-MIA Recognition Day in Oregon.  Cameron Smith, director of the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs, says more than 83,000 Americans are still missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and Iraq and Afghanistan.  In his official proclamation, the governor calls on all Oregonians to recognize their sacrifice and continued efforts to bring them home with honor and dignity.

Oregon’s observance coincides with National POW-MIA Recognition Day, which always falls on the third Friday of September.
