ODFW Reminds Hunters Safety Rules As Rifle Season Approaches

SALEM, Ore. — Rifle deer season is Oregon’s most popular hunting season, and it kicks off on Saturday.

Hunters are reminded to keep in mind the four rules of hunter safety-

  • MUZZLE: Control the direction of your muzzle at all times,
  • TRIGGER: Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot,
  • ACTION: Always treat guns as though they’re loaded. Open the action to check.
  • TARGET: Always be sure of your target, and what is in front of it and beyond it.

Last year, one person was killed and three people were injured in hunting incidents in Oregon.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says hunting incidents in Oregon have drastically declined since hunter education became mandatory in 1958.

The department certifies about 6,000 new students in hunter education each year.
