WHO Expects Ebola Infections in West Africa Will Surpass 9,000 This Week

Pawel Gaul/iStockphoto/Thinkstock(GENEVA) — The World Health Organization believes that the number of people impacted by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa will surpass 9,000 this week, and that more than 4,500 of those will have died from the disease.

Dr. Isabelle Nuttall, director of the WHO’s global capacities, alert and response, said that over 2,700 of those infected are health workers, 236 of whom have died. Every four weeks, the WHO says, the number of Ebola cases in West Africa is doubling.

The organization also identified top priority countries — those with land borders or high volumes of travel with affected nations, including Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria and others.

As far as dealing with the Ebola outbreak, Nuttall said that the principles the West African nations must adhere to are the same as ever — “be ready, detect, inform, assess, respond.”
