Is It a Win-Win Bill For Workers and Employers?

Salem, Ore. – Representative Jim Weidner (R-Yamhill) has drafted an amendment for HB 2005 that would provide financial stability and flexibility for Oregon employees and employers who offer paid sick leave. This amendment, crafted by Rep. Weidner after receiving input from various businesses in his community, is more reflective of the legislative intent by directly addressing the concerns of employers and employees.

“By talking with local businesses, constituents and employee rights advocates, I believe that this amended process of paid sick leave gives ownership and flexibility to employees and while also giving them the control to manage their funds while saving for retirement,” said Rep. Weidner.

His amendment would place 3% from the employee’s salary into a personalized paid sick leave savings account administered through the Unemployment Department. The employee would then simply file a claim for their sick days and receive their reimbursement. Employers could also opt to set-up matching accounts for their employees. Because the paid sick leave account is a personalized savings account, it would be transferable and would follow the employee until retirement. Upon retirement, any unused funds can be withdrawn and will act as an additional retirement savings account.

Rep. Weidner, who sits on the House Committee on Business and Labor, said he will work with his colleagues from both sides of the aisle to pass this common sense solution for the Oregon employee.
