Bend, Ore. -Today Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel announced he will not file criminal charges against a man who rescued two people from a car crash and then pursued and detained the driver of the car, who was attempting to flee the scene.

On August 15th Springfield resident Joshua Dornon came upon a single car roll-over crash in Redmond and extricated both occupants of the car. The driver of the car then fled the scene on foot. Dornon ran to his car to retrieve a gun and chased the driver, eventually finding him hiding in an alley. Dornon held the driver at gunpoint until the police arrived. The driver is now facing criminal charges.

“The general rule in Oregon is that people cannot point guns at other people. Exceptions exist for law enforcement officers and for people who are acting in justifiable self-defense. Mr. Dornon’s actions on August 15th were not justified under Oregon law,” said Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel. “However, not every technical violation of the law needs to be prosecuted. After reviewing the details of this case, talking with Mr. Dornon, and taking into account he had just rescued two people from a crashed car, I determined that declining to file criminal charges was appropriate.”
