Winter Storm Hits High Desert, Travel Discouraged

Central Oregon – Updated 11/24/15  8:23 pm: All Parkway locations, less jack-knifed semi at Reed Market either clear or clearing. Extreme congestion remains in Bend. Lava Butte clearing both directions. Congestion remains. Motorists urged to avoid travel on the Parkway and over Lava Butte.

8:20 pm: Deschutes Co. Sheriff’s Office report that ODOT is plowing and sanding Lava Butte hoping to get traffic moving. New crashes and stalled vehicles complicating travel. Avoid area.

7:50 pm – ODOT reports Jack-knifed truck cleared from Bend Parkway near Empire. Traffic moving again through Bend, but slowly. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through Bend and on Lava Butte.

6:30pm: Due to numerous crashes on US97, ODOT is requesting all motorists to remain in place…for the time being. Two jackknifed pickups in Bend city limits southbound, numerous slide-offs and incidents on Lava Butte southbound. ODOT crews attempting to reach collisions but finding congestion. ODOT advises motorists to remain in place for the time being due to snow.

The National Weather Service reports a low pressure system and cold front moving across the region today and tonight. The storm will result in snow for much of Central and Northeast Oregon. The winter storm warning is in effect until 7am Wednesday.
