New Mexico Man Killed In Crash On Highway 26 Near Madras

Jefferson County, Ore. – OSP Troopers and emergency personnel responded Sunday morning to the report of a single vehicle crash on Highway 26 near milepost 12 just south of Madras.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 2005 Jeep Liberty was traveling eastbound on Highway 26 when it drifted off the highway and onto the shoulder near Laurel Lane. The vehicle then veered across both lanes of travel exiting the opposite side of the highway where it rolled multiple times.

The driver, Breanna Conaway, 27 of Vancouver, Washington, received minor injuries and was taken to Saint Charles Madras for treatment. Her five year old daughter also received minor injuries and was taken to Saint Charles Madras.

The front seat passenger, Klayton Gibson, age 28, of Moriarty, New Mexico was ejected during the crash and died of his injuries at the scene. Gibson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Distracted driving is being investigated as a contributing factor.

OSP was assisted by Crook County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon Department of Transportation, Jefferson County Fire District, and Crook County Fire and Rescue.
