Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson Faces 3rd Harassment Claim

Deschutes County, Ore. – A Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office employee is accusing Sheriff Shane Nelson of harassment. This is the third claim against Nelson in two months.

The Bulletin reports Lt. Tim Leak, who’s been on leave since May, filed a Bureau of Labor and Industries harassment complaint against Nelson and the sheriff’s office on Oct. 11.

Leak claims an investigation into his behavior was unwarranted, and that the office has refused to tell him the nature of a complaint against him, and that the office has repeatedly refuse to accommodate his medical needs. Details of Leak’s medical records are not available.

Leak, who did not return calls for comment, claims the harassment started in November 2015 during the investigation into former Capt. Scott Beard, who was sentenced to five years in prison for stealing more than $250,000 from the office.

Nelson has dismissed the validity of Leak’s allegations, as he did with the previous two, stating that his office has acted within the department’s policies and procedure.
