the_guitar_mann/iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — A series of tests performed by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons have definitively confirmed the use of Sarin or a Sarin-like substance in Syria’s Idlib province.

OPCW Director General Ahmet Üzümcü informed members of the organization on Wednesday during a meeting to address the alleged use of Sarin gas by Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad against his own people. The OPCW cited results of testing on samples collected from three victims of the attack at two different OPCW-designated laboratories.

“The results of the analysis indicate that the victims were exposed to Sarin or a Sarin-like substance,” Üzümcü said. “Bio-medical samples from seen individuals undergoing treatment at hospitals were also analysed in two other OPCW designated laboratories. Similarly, the results of these analyses indicate exposure to Sarin or a Sarin-like substance.”

While further testing will be done, Üzümcü said, “the analytical results already obtained are incontrovertible.”

The chemical weapons attack earlier this month prompted the U.S. to launch tomahawk missiles at the airbase from which the Syrian planes involved took off.
