Bend man arrested for robbery he reported

On November 6th at 3:38pm, Deschutes County 911 Dispatch notified officers with the Bend Police Department about a robbery that had just occurred. The reported robbery took place in the Albertson’s South parking lot (61155 South Highway 97). Limited information was given by the suspected victim of the robbery.

Several Bend Police Officers initially responded to the report of the robbery. After gaining a vague description of the robbery suspect, officers and detectives spent the next hour searching a wide area in south Bend attempting to locate the suspect of the robbery.

The victim, identified as Billy Showen, reported he was going to deposit cash from 7-11 South at the bank inside the Albertson’s store. Showen stated he was walking through the parking lot and the suspect hit him and took the bag with the US currency.

Detectives and officers continued with the investigation, to include reviewing video surveillance from surrounding businesses and talking to multiple people in the area of the event.

Based on the investigation and lack of corroborating evidence, Showen was interviewed further about the event. During this time Showen admitted to making up the robbery story. The investigation found Showen had hid the US Currency intended to be deposited. The entire amount of missing currency was recovered at Showen’s southeast Bend residence.

Showen was lodged at the Deschutes County Jail on charges of Aggravated Theft I and Initiating a False Report.
