Man Enters Plea In “Breath-Holding “Tunnel Crash

PORTLAND, OR — The 20-year-old man who told investigators he fainted while holding his breath as he drove through an NW Portland tunnel, resulting in a three-vehicle crash, has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges.  Daniel Calhoon, Snohomish, WA, was arraigned Wednesday on three counts of 4th Degree Assault and one count each of Reckless Driving and 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief.  Calhoon, his passenger and two people in an SUV were injured in the May 25th crash on Highway 26.  OSP investigators said they aren’t sure why Calhoon held his breath, but some people hold their breaths in tunnels as part of a game or superstition.

Authorities said Calhoon showed no signs of intoxication at the time of the crash, and there was no indication of a medical issue or cellphone use.
