More Assessment Teams Arrive in Iraq

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — Army Col. Steve Warren provided new information about the latest U.S. forces to arrive in Baghdad amidst the ongoing situation in Iraq on Thursday.

Four teams of advisors reportedly arrived in the Iraqi capital on Wednesday, totalling six teams now on the ground. The first personnel launched on June 24, the White House informed Congress on Thursday, and a group of 90 personnel on the ground set up the joint operations center in Baghdad, while the newest arrivals bring the total number of assessors to 90. The Department of Defense says that those groups account for 180 of the 300 U.S. service members that President Obama had said he was prepared to send to Iraq.

The teams will spend the upcoming weeks assessing the Iraqi military and make reports.

In total, 500 military personnel are currently working in Baghdad, Warren said.
