Brazil Advances Past Chile in Penalty Kicks

Jean Catuffe/Getty Images(BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil) — It wasn’t easy but Brazil advances to the World Cup quarterfinals by beating Chile 3-2 in penalty kicks, after finishing the first 120 minutes in a 1-1 draw.

Neymar scored on Brazil’s fifth penalty shot and Chile’s Gonzalo Jara’s missed the tying shot, nailing it off the post, to keep the host country alive.

“We needed this,” Brazil goalie Julio Cesar said. “I just hope that the next games don’t go to penalty kicks again because our family members and relatives might have a heart attack.”

Brazil started the scoring in the 18th minute when David Luiz scored his first World Cup goal. The lead didn’t last long, as Chile’s Alexis Sanchez slid one past Cesar and into the back of the net in the 38th minute to tie the match.

The rest of the game featured close calls but no goals. During stoppage time before the half, Chile almost scored off a corner but Luiz slid in front of the ball to keep the match tied.

Chile also had a chance in the 121st minute to end it, when Mauricio Pinilla’s smashed a shot that just hit the crossbar.

Brazil advances to take on Colombia Friday. The match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. You can catch that on ESPN.
