BEND, OR — Oregon State Police troopers say four people were killed in four separate traffic crashes statewide during the 4th of July holiday period. One of those deaths occurred in Central Oregon, when a 48-year-old man rolled his pickup truck NE of Madras Saturday evening. The other’s included:
- A 21-year old Reedsport man who crashed in the Loon Lake area off Highway 38 Friday morning
- A 16-year old St. Helens girl who rolled her car near Rainier early Saturday morning
- A 94-year old woman from Hines who rolled her car on Steens Mountain Loop Road in Harney County
The four deaths the same figure reported during 4th of July 2013. The deadliest 4th of July holiday period occurred in 1980 when there were 19 reported deaths during a 78-hour period. Since 1970, a total of 306 people have died in traffic crashes in Oregon during the Fourth of July holiday reporting periods.
Troopers also reported 50 DUII arrests statewide during the holiday period, a decrease from last year’s 60 DUII arrests. Five of this year’s arrests occurred in Central Oregon.
