BEND, OR — We’re in the heart of summer vacation, but school districts across Central Oregon are working to feed children. The Summer Feeding Program, a federally funded effort, provides breakfasts and lunches to anyone under 18 years of age through late August. Liane Kaiser, Nutrition Services Manger for the Redmond School District, told KBNW News the need may not be as visible during the summer months, but it remains.
“There is, unfortunately, a high population of households that are qualifying for meal benefits during the school year. And, what do those children then do during the summer months.”
Kaiser said the program offers hot meals, cold food, health beverages and more. And many programs across Central Oregon incorporate education and entertainment with the Summer Meals Program, such as Bend-La Pine’s Lunch and Learn.
