Saturday Afternoon Fire Destroys Bend House

072114 Bend House FireBEND, OR — Investigators said an improperly disposed of cigarette butt destroyed a Bend house Saturday afternoon.  Crews were called to SE Riviera Dr. shortly after 12:30 p.m., where flames were pouring from one side of a duplex.  Firefighters worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings, and snuff out a nearby brush fire that started.

The one side of the duplex and everything inside was destroyed, while the other side of the duplex suffered some damage.  A nearby apartment building at the Pine Villa Apartments sustained heat damage in Saturday’s fire.  The Red Cross is helping the four adults and child displaced by this weekend’s fire.

Bend Fire would like to remind the community the importance of proper disposal of cigarettes and other smoking materials. If you smoke, please make sure you extinguish the cigarettes and disposed of the butts properly. Place cigarette butts in a large, non-combustible container, preferably filled with water. Never dispose of any hot materials into household trash.
