Queen Elizabeth, US Express Disinterest in Influencing Scotland Independence Referendum

stevanovicigor/iStockphoto/Thinkstock(LONDON) — With the people of Scotland set to vote on their independence from the United Kingdom, international leaders have stated their disinterest in getting involved in the referendum.

On Sept. 18, anyone over the age of 16 who lives in Scotland will be allowed to vote on the referendum. The question posed will be, “Should Scotland be an independent country?” According to the U.K. government website, the side with the most votes will win the referendum regardless of voter turnout.

On Tuesday, a statement was released on behalf of Queen Elizabeth by a Buckingham Palace spokesman, saying that her “constitutional impartiality is an established principle of our democracy and one which the Queen has demonstrated throughout her reign.” The Queen, the statement noted, “is above politics.” She believes that the referendum “is a matter for the people of Scotland” and that she is uninterested in influencing the outcome of the vote.

Also on Tuesday, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf shared a similar position, declaring the department’s belief that the referendum is “an internal matter.”
